A survival sandbox with no script

DayZ drops you into a post-apocalyptic world with no missions and no quests. You spawn with nothing and have to find food, water, tools, clothes and weapons yourself. Hunger, body temperature, diseases and injuries all matter, and the game gives you very little help: no map markers, no mini-map, no navigation HUD. You read your condition through a minimal toggleable HUD or, mostly, through your own observation of the character and the world. The base game ships two maps: Chernarus, a 230 km² post-Soviet landscape inspired by real locations in North Bohemia, and Livonia, a 168 km² region of dense forests that looks friendlier than it is. Both are open, continuous terrains you cross on foot.

Playing it with your group

Up to 60 players survive in the same world at any time, so your friends are sharing that space with strangers who can help or shoot you. There is no squad lobby or round structure — you meet up yourselves, over voice chat or emotes, and stay together as long as you can. Co-op play means coordinating looting routes, splitting gear, covering each other through infected-infested villages, and deciding as a group whether an unknown survivor gets a gun aimed at them or a hand up. PvP works the same way: hostile players are simply other survivors in the world. Beyond shooting, groups can build a base, set up a farm, hunt, fish, place traps, repair a car or truck and drive it around to reach dynamic events like train crashes, abandoned military convoys and PvP hotspots. Full NBC suits let a prepared team enter contaminated zones.

What to know before you start

Expect a slow, deliberate pace. Loot is scarce, so you will spend time searching buildings and reading the environment rather than fighting. The world is openly hostile: infected attack on sight, wolves and bears prowl the forests, and diseases appear without warning until you learn to diagnose them from your own symptoms. Crafting covers the gaps — repairing damaged clothes, building a fire to cook rations, making improvised tools. There are over 50 firearm types to find, each with its own magazines and ammunition, which makes scavenging a real decision about what to carry. Death ends that life and you start over, so no two runs play out the same. Steam Workshop support and community-run servers are managed from the game launcher, and Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud are available alongside Valve Anti-Cheat protection.
