Dawn of the Rotten is a first-person zombie shooter with a separate Online mode for two-player co-op. You and one friend take on the infected together in an experimental beta that may have bugs, glitches, or other unexpected issues.

A separate mode for two

The base game follows a journey after civilization has collapsed: fuel is scarce, and the route through abandoned places leads toward a quarantine zone inside a shopping mall. Online brings that survival premise to a pair of players. It is a distinct mode with systems that differ from the original game, packaged as free downloadable content that requires the base game.

To start it, launch Dawn of the Rotten through Steam and choose Online from the launch options. The pair faces zombie hordes and collects gasoline as part of the shared survival goal.

Three maps, one rough survival-horror look

Online spans The Motel, Project Housing, and the Shopping Mall. The base game covers six locations—The Motel, Apartments, Shopping Mall, Caves, Streets, and Trailer Park—so the co-op beta has a smaller rotation. A Motel scene centers on an open courtyard between low buildings; a Shopping Mall view looks from an upper walkway into a broad, storefront-lined atrium, with zombies below. Project Housing rounds out the co-op set.

The game leans into a worn VHS-era horror look: grain, scan lines, muddy colors, and low-resolution textures give it the feel of degraded tape. Its first-person spaces and old-school, slow zombies draw on B-movie imagery, while blood, gore, and visible dismemberment make the tone graphic. Online keeps the familiar visual identity but makes the infected more aggressive, giving its two-player encounters a harsher edge than the base game.

Controls and group fit

Online is built for two people total, with both players working toward the same survival objective. Xbox gamepads, mouse-sensitivity settings, and a pause menu are available in the mode. A zombie-pushing adjustment also makes infected shove players around less during fights.

The mode runs on Windows PC and requires online play.

This is a focused fit for two friends looking for a compact zombie session. A larger group will need separate two-player sessions or a game with a higher team limit.
