Fighting through a ruined world
CODE VEIN is a third-person action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world. You play as a Revenant, fighting the Lost with fast, close-range combat. The game leans into the souls-like style: enemies hit hard, and you need to read their attacks, manage your stamina, and pick your moments to strike. Between fights, you explore connected dungeons and push through a story-driven journey to uncover your past and escape the nightmare you are living in.
Playing together in co-op
You do not have to face this alone. The game supports online co-op, letting you team up with a friend to venture into the world of destruction together. You can also bring along an AI partner when you are on your own. In co-op, you coordinate your approach, cover each other from surprise attacks, and combine your strength to take down enemies that would be overpowering on your own. The same partner system applies to NPCs, so you can pick who joins you based on what you need for the fight ahead.
Building your Revenant
Your loadout is where the RPG depth sits. You choose from weapons like bayonets, axes, and spears, each changing how you handle a fight. Blood Code enhancements give you access to Gifts, which can raise your strength, weaken enemies, unlock new weapon abilities, or open up powerful attacks. Your Blood Veil is a blood-draining tool with its own visual style and attack pattern, adding another layer of combat options. The game lets you change your character class at any time and mix and match skills, so you can adjust your build on the fly when a particular fight is not working.
What to know before starting
CODE VEIN is tagged as difficult, and the combat rewards patience over button mashing. Expect to die and adapt your approach. The character customization goes deep, so spend time in the menus early to understand how Blood Codes, Gifts, and Blood Veils interact. If you plan to play with friends, the co-op setup is worth sorting out before you dive in, since coordinating your builds together makes the tougher encounters much more manageable.
