What Clownfield 2042 is

Clownfield 2042 is a first-person shooter built around a joke premise taken seriously: after a crypto crash triggered by NFTs in 2022, most nations fell apart and a union of "No-Clowns" was formed. You play as one of those soldiers, armed and dropped into the front. The tone runs from parody and memes to horror tags, so expect a mix of daft humor and actual gunfire rather than a straight military sim. The setting is delivered through the arsenal, the maps and the sheer number of ways things can go wrong.

Playing it with a group

The main draw for a group is All Out Clownfare multiplayer, where you fight real players and highly skilled AI across a wide spread of weapons and maps. Four modes are available: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Domination and Gun Game. Three factions are in the game — US, Russia and No-Clowns — with six skins per faction, so you can pick a side together or split up and go lone wolf. Eleven maps back all of this up. Voice chat and text chat are built in, which keeps a Discord squad coordinated mid-match, and a loadout system lets you shape your kit before you spawn. Alongside standard play there is a hovercraft zone, where vehicles deliberately disrupt the physics and break the usual rules of the match.

Before you start

Clownfield Gateway is the single-player option, letting you set up your own session and turn on the deliberately over-the-top weather, including an exaggerated tornado effect. Treat that mode as a sandbox more than a campaign. Go in expecting rough edges: the developers openly state there are plenty of bugs, and that skins get added rather than bugs fixed. The weapon list includes an overpowered shotgun and very loud flashbangs, so keep your headset volume in mind. It's tagged as violent and includes horror elements alongside the comedy, which is worth knowing before you hand it to the whole group.
