Recording monsters on New Wirral

Cassette Beasts is an open-world RPG set on New Wirral, a remote island full of strange creatures and a cast of people who fight by transforming with cassette tapes. You record a monster to tape, play it back, and take on its form for battle. Some monster abilities work even in human form, and you'll need them to get around the island: glide, fly, swim, climb, dash, or turn magnetic to reach new areas, solve puzzles, and find dungeons. The island is meant to be explored inch by inch as you look for a way home.

Fusing forms and fighting

Battles are turn-based and built around elemental chemistry. Attacking with the right element can add buffs or debuffs, and some moves can even change your opponent's elemental type. The Fusion System lets any two monster forms combine into a brand-new, fully animated fusion form, so there's plenty of room to experiment with combinations. Fusing depends on your bond with a human companion: you travel alongside a selected partner, spend time with them, help them complete personal goals, and a stronger relationship means better fusions. There's also the Gauntlet, a never-ending battle mode where you face tough enemies for material and glory.

Playing with friends

You can team up with a friend in local multiplayer to explore, transform, and fight together. Online multiplayer lets you party up to trade monster tapes, challenge friends to 1v1 battles, and team up against powerful Rogue Fusion beasts for rewards. Remote Play Together is supported as well, so a friend can join in from your session.

Before you start

Expect a long, story-rich adventure with lots of collecting, exploration, and a deeper battle system than it first appears. Take time to record a wide variety of monsters, since abilities in human form open up the map, and keep your companion close since the fusion mechanic leans on that relationship. If you're playing with others, decide early whether you want to trade tapes, duel, or hunt Rogue Fusions together.
