What VASARA Collection is
VASARA Collection brings together two Japanese arcade shoot 'em ups, VASARA (2000) and VASARA 2 (2001), plus a new mode called Timeless mode. The games are set in an alternate timeline Feudal Japan where science fiction and history sit side by side: heroes ride flying motorcycles with heavy firepower and also carry fierce melee weapons. You fight robots and samurai using both your shots and close-range attacks, and everything on screen is trying to kill you. The action plays out from a top-down view in 2D pixel graphics, with dense bullet patterns that reward precise movement and timing.
There are 8 playable characters, each inspired by a real Japanese historical figure. Your choice matters beyond looks: branching paths and multiple endings depend on which character you pick and what you do during a run. The collection also supports Tate Mode, the vertical screen orientation used by classic arcade cabinets, which suits this style of shooter.
Playing together
The games support 4 player local play, so a group can share one screen and take on the waves together. Local co-op is on the table, and the tag list also includes PvP, so there is competitive play available alongside the cooperative side. Steam's Remote Play Together feature lets people join in over a connection even when they are not in the same room, with one person owning the game.
Before you start
Expect a heavily skill-based game. The bullet-hell density means you will spend time learning patterns, dodging, and finding openings for your melee attacks rather than holding a direction and firing. An Easy Mode is included for players who are just starting out, which is the sensible first stop before moving up to the full difficulty. A controller is supported, and the vertical orientation option is worth trying if you want the authentic arcade layout. Pick your character with the endings in mind, since the paths you unlock depend on who you play and how you act during the run.
