What Rainbow Six Siege is
Rainbow Six Siege is a first-person, team-based shooter built around short rounds where planning matters as much as aim. Matches are 5v5, and both teams switch between attack and defense. On defense you reinforce walls, put up barricades, set traps and place surveillance tools to control how the enemy moves through the map. On attack you scout the bomb site with observation drones, then breach reinforced defenses, avoid traps and create openings to reach the objective. You can also strike vertically, coming through floors, ceilings or windows using rappel.
Destruction is a core mechanic rather than a side effect. Walls can be broken to open new lines of sight, and technology on hand lets you track enemy movement and reshape the environment to gain an advantage.
Playing with your group
Your party of five can queue together for 5v5 rounds, which is the format the game is designed around. Everyone picks an operator, and each round your team has to divide jobs: who gathers intel with drones, who reinforces and holds the site, who breaches. Because you swap sides between rounds, you need a group comfortable switching from a defensive setup to an aggressive push and back again.
The store text lists free access to Quick Match and Unranked modes with a selection of operators, so a group can start playing together without paying. Ranked playlists, Siege Cup, extra operators and cosmetics are behind payment.
Before you start
Expect a learning curve. The game includes an onboarding path with a clearance level system that walks new players through the basics in stages before you jump into full tactical play, so stick with it through the early levels.
Seasons bring major updates with new content and features, which means maps, operators and tactics shift over time. Approach it as a game you learn continuously rather than one you solve once. Controller support covers full controller, DualShock and DualSense, and the game supports Remote Play on phone and tablet alongside single-player, multiplayer, PvP, co-op and online co-op options.
