What The Spike Cross is

The Spike Cross is a volleyball game built by an indie developer who loves the sport, and it aims to catch the parts of volleyball that make it exciting: the spike above all. Matches are played in 3v3, and you can call for quicks, pipes, open attacks and fast tempo attacks, so the offense is about timing and reading the set rather than mashing a button. The whole thing is drawn in a cartoony, anime-flavored 2D style, which keeps the action readable on screen even when the tempo picks up.

How a group plays it together

You control exactly one player on the court from the first serve to the last point, so your job is to position yourself, call your attack and finish the point with a spike while the rest of the squad fills in around you. That makes it easy to split roles in a group: one person runs the quick, another takes the pipe, someone else covers the back row. The Steam features list Remote Play Together, so a friend can join your session from their own machine. The tags also include Local Multiplayer, PvP and PvE, so there are ways to play against other people as well as against the computer.

Modes and story

Normal volleyball is not the only option. The game includes a tournament, a colosseum, beach volleyball and more, so a group can rotate between a bracket run, a survival-style challenge and a relaxed beach match without switching games. There is also a storyline following Siwoo through both his volleyball and his inner growth, with other characters appearing in the universe of The Spike. Expect visual novel-style scenes between the matches.

Before you start

The core loop is one controlled player inside a 3v3 match, so the learning curve is about court positioning, reading your setter and choosing the right attack for the tempo. It is listed as free to play, and the tags cover both casual play and eSports-flavored competition, so the same game works for a quick session with friends or a longer grind. The singleplayer and PvE tags mean you can practice on your own before bringing the group in.
