A third-person soccer game built on ball control

IOSoccer is a free, non-commercial competitive soccer game played from a third-person view. The combination of that camera with mouse and keyboard input gives you direct control over dribbling, shooting, and passing, and the game leans on that freedom for its depth. Skill moves are part of the toolkit: bicycle kicks, diving headers, ball flicks, and precision dribbling are all in play. The project has a long history, starting 15 years ago as the Half-Life mod International Online Soccer, moving to the Source Engine for a 2008 re-release, and later getting a complete code rewrite with new player models and many added gameplay features.

Playing together in a group

Team sizes are flexible, covering everything from 1 to 11 players per side, so a group can run a 4v4 street game or a standard 8v8 matchup. The goalkeeper spot can be handled by the server's AI or taken by a player on the fly, which is an easy way to share roles within a group. Public matches let you join and leave casual servers whenever you want, while competitive play runs through community-organized leagues and cups with a club, national team, or mix team. Dedicated servers are available officially or through a hoster of your choice. Before kickoff, warm up mode gives every player their own ball to practice shots on the goalkeeper, and after goals, instant replays and highlights show the moment from the TV camera's perspective, with intermissions to catch chances you missed. Goal celebrations can be choreographed with various animations across the team.

What to know before starting

Player customization covers shirt name, shirt number, ethnicity, hair style, shoes, keeper gloves, ball, and sleeve length, so each of you can look distinct on the pitch. The game also supports custom assets, letting you make your own maps, team kits, balls, shoes, and keeper gloves. Input is mouse and keyboard, with controller support listed. The game is 100% free with no microtransactions or other hidden costs.
