What FOTONICA is

FOTONICA is a first-person runner built around speed. You move through abstract, vector-style environments at extreme pace, and the whole game is drawn to sell that feeling: light, void, and lines rushing past. It follows the arcade tradition of being simple to pick up and hard to master, so the controls are easy to learn while clean runs take real practice. There are eight tracks to explore and master, each with multi-layered level design, plus three different endless levels where you compete for high scores. Four difficulty settings let you push the game even faster once you have the basics down.

Playing it together

The main way a group plays FOTONICA together is the four-player split-screen local multiplayer mode, where you race against each other in split-screen versus challenges. That is where the "can you outrun your friends" question gets answered, since the game is built around score attack and precision, and small mistakes cost you the lead. If your group is scattered, Remote Play Together lets people join in from their own machines. Beyond playing together, the game tracks 20 achievements and game stats, and online rankings let you see where your runs land against other players.

Before you start

Expect a game that is easy to get into but demanding to do well in. Speed is the point, and the precision platforming means you will be failing runs while you learn the tracks — that is the intended loop, not a sign you are doing it wrong. The visuals are abstract and minimalist rather than detailed, and the electronic soundtrack from Michael Manning, Nicolò Sala, and Baiyon carries a lot of the atmosphere, so playing with sound on matters. Split-screen means sharing a screen with up to three others, so plan for that setup before you gather. Start on a lower difficulty to learn the routes, then move up when the tracks stop feeling fast enough.
