Hope County and the cult you're fighting

Far Cry 5 is an open world first-person shooter set in Montana, where Joseph Seed and his family lead a fanatical doomsday cult called Eden's Gate. You take territory back from them across Hope County, and the world changes as you push the cult out. Missions, outposts and encounters spread across the map, so there is no fixed order to how you clear an area.

How combat and movement work

You can go in loud or quiet. The arsenal runs from melee shovels to heavy rocket launchers, and stealth takedowns are available when you would rather stay unseen. Getting around is part of the play: pilot planes for aerial dogfights, drive muscle cars and ATVs through farmlands, and travel by land, air and water as you move between objectives.

Fighting with followers

You are not stuck fighting on your own. Guns for Hire are specialized rebels who give tactical support, while Fangs for Hire are animal allies — Boomer the dog and Cheeseburger the bear — who scout, distract and maul enemy squads. Picking who tags along changes how an assault plays out, so swapping recruits between missions keeps the approach fresh.

Playing the campaign with a friend

The full campaign can be played solo or in 2-player co-op online. In co-op you coordinate tactics and share arsenals while you reclaim Hope County together, so one of you can pin enemies down while the other flanks, or you can split the work of clearing an outpost. Progress is shared through the same open world, and you can drop in on a friend's campaign rather than starting from scratch.

Before you start

The game supports single-player, multiplayer and online co-op, with Steam Achievements and Steam Trading Cards, and a level editor is included for building your own maps. Captions and HDR are available, and controller support is partial, so check your setup if you prefer playing with a pad. In-App Purchases appear in the game, and the store text notes a Deluxe and a Gold Edition, the latter carrying a season pass that includes Far Cry 3.
