Two ways to play
Toy Story 3 Complete Edition is a 3D action-adventure built around the 2010 film. Story Mode walks you through recognizable scenes from the movie, from Andy's room to Sunnyside Daycare, including the train rescue, Operation Playtime, and the junkyard. You swap between Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie as levels demand, since each of them handles differently. Woody can swing on his pull string, and Buzz can throw the other toys long distances with his strength. The Complete Edition also carries upgraded graphics, resolution, and framerate, plus content that was previously restricted to certain versions of the game.
Playing together
The game supports local two-player co-op, and a friend can join you in either Story Mode or Toy Box Mode. In Story Mode you work through the film's set pieces together, switching characters to use the ability the situation needs. Remote Play Together is also listed as a Steam feature, so one person can host and others can join in over the internet. The co-op is shared on one screen, so you sit down together and pick up where the story left off.
Toy Box Mode
Step out of the story and into Woody's Roundup, a customizable wild west sandbox. You still play as Woody, Buzz, or Jessie, but here you set your own pace. Characters around town hand out quests, and completing them earns gold you spend on personalizing the town. You can build, decorate, and customize buildings, dress up the townsfolk, and generally reshape the place to your taste. This Complete Edition adds the ability to play as Emperor Zurg in Toy Box Mode, along with four additional Theme Packs for decorating your Toy Box.
Before you start
Expect a game that leans on platforming, collecting, and light combat rather than deep systems. Story Mode follows the film closely, so it plays best if someone in the group already knows the movie, though the levels stand on their own as 3D platforming challenges. Toy Box Mode is the longer, more open-ended half, and it rewards players who like missions and building over following a script. Check that everyone is set up for local co-op or Remote Play Together before you begin, since the group play options are the main reason to bring friends in.
