What Black Desert is

Black Desert is an open-world action MMORPG from Pearl Abyss, built on the studio's own engine. You make a character with a deep customization tool — height, torso, face, skin texture, and finer details are all adjustable — then head out into a large world. Combat is non-target and fast-paced: you aim your own attacks, react quickly, and string together commands and combos instead of tab-selecting a target and waiting out a rotation. On top of fighting, the world is full of scenery and environments meant to be explored at your own pace.

Playing it with friends

Groups come together mostly through guilds. Guilds fight head-to-head in node wars and siege wars, large-scale PvP battles where victory means taking control of taxes, resources, and territory. Fighting alongside friends to siege and conquer castles is the core of that. Outside of war, you can team up for co-op play and take on massive world bosses that need a crowd to bring down. Combat is PvP-friendly in the open world as well, with online PvP available alongside cooperative play, so the same group can split between fighting other players and covering each other against boss encounters.

Life skills when you want a slower pace

Fighting is not the only way to spend time. The game carries a long list of life skills: farming, trading, fishing, sailing, cooking, horse training, alchemy, gathering, hunting, and more. These work as real professions rather than side diversions, so a group can cover different roles — one person trading, another fishing, someone else cooking or training horses — and still progress together. It also gives players who prefer a calmer session something substantial to do.

Before you start

Character creation is worth taking slowly, since the customization goes down to micro-level details and you will be looking at that character for a long time. Expect a remastered build of the graphics and audio, which means a heavier load than lighter MMOs. The game includes in-app purchases, so be aware that the store is part of the experience. Controller support is partial, so some parts of the interface and combat may feel better with a keyboard and mouse. Steam trading cards are supported. Combat rewards quick reactions and precise control, so the first hours take some practice before combos feel natural.
