A Dark Afterlife to Explore
Animyst drops you into The Droughts, a giant desert filled with ancient ruins and occult monsters. You play as one of the Undead, choosing between a Skeleton warrior assembled from mass grave bones or a Fleshy Corpse, the walking remains of an embalmed aristocrat. The world is a single open online realm where history has crumbled to dust and magic has pulled you back from the dead. A voice whispers in your head, leading you on a quest for knowledge and power as you search for pages of an old book called The Lore, which may hold the key to salvation.
Playing Together in the Realm of the Dead
Your group can travel, explore, and build alongside faction members in this shared world. The game supports both cooperative and competitive play through its online co-op and PvP features. You can befriend other players or battle them in first-person combat, stalk enemy territory to find players to kill and bases to crumble, or simply make friends and dance together using animated emotes. Establishing a community with a Throne brings benefits for being a good neighbor, giving your group a reason to work with others rather than against them.
Building, Spells, and Combat
Base building uses free-placing gigantic stone monoliths, so you can construct your own Stonehenge and live inside it. Combat mixes PvE and PvP in an open-world setting with recurring daily events. Spellcasting is central to how you play: craft spells and magic trinkets for a fully customizable loadout, then throw fireballs, create giant sandstorms, hurl meteors, and glide from the highest peaks. Before starting, note that Animyst has been in open development since 2018 and is built by a tiny team of two, so the experience is still evolving.
