A 2D Sonic platformer
Sonic Mania is a new 2D adventure built around the classic formula: run, jump, and roll through zones at high speed. The game runs at 60FPS with HD retro-style pixel graphics. You can pick between three characters, and each one changes how a stage plays. Sonic is built for raw speed, Tails can soar, and Knuckles uses brute strength to push through tough obstacles. The zones revisit familiar ground from the past with new twists, and you face fresh bosses along with Dr. Eggman's robot army.
Playing together
The game has two ways to share the screen. Co-Op Mode lets a friend join you for the main run through the zones. Competition Mode puts players head-to-head instead, for when the group wants something more direct. Steam also lists Remote Play Together, which lets people join over a connection rather than sitting at the same machine.
Before you start
Pick your character with the group's play style in mind. Sonic suits a straight, fast run, Tails opens up vertical movement, and Knuckles is the pick for breaking through stubborn sections. The difficulty comes from the platforming itself and the bosses, so expect to retry a few stretches. The soundtrack leans hard on the classic sound, which fits the retro presentation.
