A quiet sail around the Akalana Islands
Pancake Sailor puts you in your own small interactive sailboat in the Akalana Islands, an idyllic Caribbean location with bays and open seas to cross at sunset. There is no goal to chase. You explore and enjoy the trip, steering and trimming the sails with simple keyboard controls while the mouse lets you look around or shift the camera for a better view. The audio is built around sailing and ocean sounds, so the trip stays calm and immersive. The sailing mechanics are simple but realistic: to sail upwind you need to zig-zag and tack, the same way it works in real life. An optional voice-over instructor is there to give you basic tips when you want them, and beginners are welcome with no prior experience required.
Sailing together with friends
The game supports online co-op, so you can sail with friends instead of alone. Everyone gets their own boat and the same set of controls, which makes it easy to pick up even if nobody in the group has sailed before. The group can simply wander the islands together, or line up a run and compare results through Easy Race, where you race and compare your score with the global community of players. The multiplayer session also includes sailors coming from VR Regatta, so people on headsets can join the same water as people on keyboard.
The map and what to expect
The Akalana Islands map has seven named spots to work through: Half Moon Bay, The Hei Tik Island, Jade Island, Iguana Rock, Whale Island, Shipwreck Atoll, and David's Shoals. These give the group a loose set of destinations to aim for while you get a feel for steering and speed management, including how to sail upwind and downwind.
Before starting, know that the game is a relaxed sandbox rather than a competition with a finish line. The only scoring comes from the optional Easy Race mode, and the rest of your time is spent exploring. Controls are limited to steering with A and D and sail handling with W and S, so the whole group can be up and running quickly. If someone in your group owns a VR headset, they can explore the islands through VR Regatta while you sail alongside them.
